Greenway Home Products - Bisphenol A (BPA) Statement

There has been much controversy recently, over the plastic additive Bisphenol A (BPA) in plastic products for consumables. Health Canada has recently released a report stating the health and environmental concerns associated with BPA are limited to the exposure of infants and newborns. The plastic composition of the Vitapur Water Filtration System (VBF6) contains Bisphenol A., a chemical used in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics that constitute 3 and 5 gallon recyclable drinking water jugs on the market. The Vitapur filtration (VBF6) polycarbonate bottle is NSF approved and uses USFDA certified plastic.

As part of their evaluation, Health Canada reviewed 150 sets of data, which included the 18 liter polycarbonate water cooler bottles that some Canadian Bottled Water Association (CBWA) members use to deliver drinking water. Minister of Health, Tony Clement stated “Canadians can continue to use hard plastic, reusable water bottles; there is no health risk”. As they have for years, Health Canada has again determined that polycarbonate water bottled used with water coolers are safe for use, and should be commended for basing its decision on all evidence available, including by third party researchers using widely accepted scientific methods.

In addition, the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) states that bottled water is comprehensively regulated as a food product by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Plastic food and beverage containers, including polycarbonate plastic made with BPA, must meet or exceed all FDA requirements. Furthermore, many studies have been conducted to assess the potential for trace levels of BPA to migrate from polycarbonate bottles into foods or beverages.  The conclusions from those studies and comprehensive safety evaluations by government bodies worldwide are that polycarbonate bottles are safe for consumer use.

Drinking plenty of water is an important and recommended part of a healthy diet. Refillable, reusable and recyclable drinking water jugs for water dispensers are environmentally friendly, most cost effective and part of a healthy lifestyle.

As alternatives to the polycarbonate plastic drinking water bottles, GHP also manufactures other water dispenser filtration systems and water filter pitcher systems that do not contain BPA. These systems are available across North America at participating retailers.
